CLOSET/STORAGE DESIGN

Many of us relate to the word “Closet” as dealing with clothes. But “closet” is any space behind a closed door, whether it houses linens, sports, utilitarian, crafts, luggage and of course clothing. Maximizing empty space is one of the essentials of efficient closet design. Or said another way, the secret to a good closet is not the amount of space you have, but how you use it. So the design is the important part of a closet. “How we execute it is a matter of economics.” Shelving and drawers, for instance, can be made from rich solid maple or from simpler, less expensive materials.

CLOTHES CLOSET TIPS

  • Use all of the same type and size of hangers in a category – jacket hangers are different than t-shirt hangers. No wire hangers!
  • Organize your clothes by color or by casual to formal.
  • Get shoes up off the floor and onto shelves. By arranging pairs with one toe facing out, one toe facing in, you can maximize space.
  • Try non-fluorescent lighting in your closet; it's less likely to discolor your clothes and more flattering too.
  • Your entire closet doesn't have to be cedar to enjoy the benefits; put cedar panels or liners into just your sweater drawers or cabinets.
  • Add a full-length mirror to your closet. This is not only practical but lends a grand feel to the space. Position it so that you can stand far enough away from the glass that you can see an accurate image. And buy the best quality mirror that you can afford; one of poor quality will distort your image.
  • If you have the space, try adding something unexpected and luxurious to your closet, such as a chaise. Hooks on the side of walls are increase the hanging space.

LINEN CLOSET TIPS

  • Sheets can be folded in sets or separated between flat and top. The important thing is to label the shelf: king, queen, and twin.
  • Have a separate space for pillow cases, blankets, pillows and bed skirts.
  • Roll blankets instead of laying them flat. Easier to access.
  • Towels are usually stored with sheets

UTILITY CLOSET TIPS

  • Household items which usually get separated all over the house are: luggage, wrapping paper, sports, cleaning products, tools and gifts. Gather up one category and assign a shelf or drawer to area.
  • Have a separate hook for scissors. This will always be where they are. I suggest having a pair of scissors in each room.
  • Drawers are better to store tools, ribbons, glues and scotch tape.
  • Luggage items today consist of rolling luggage, tote bags, brief cases and even shopping bags. Shelves and shelf dividers manage these items.
